Co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates, in this telephone conference with reporters from Nigeria, Stockholm, Uganda and others, speaks about 2019 Goalkeepers Report, Nigeria, the role of geography on inequality and many more. Excerpts: High level of poverty and inequality that exists in Nigeria Well, Nigeria is a super-important country and one that the foundation has an office there.  We did a lot of work in Nigeria on polio and we learned a lot doing that.  Nigeria has gone almost three years now without having a polio case. The biggest priority we have, although making absolutely sure we’re done with polio remains a big priority, now we’re able to focus even more on the primary health care system. If I had one wish for Nigeria, it would be that the quality and funding of the primary health care system would achieve the level of some other countries that are lower-income but have done a better job with the primary health care system.  So,

South African authorities have granted landing permit to Air Peace Flight B777 to enable it to evacuate some 320 Nigerians escaping from xenophobia in that country, a Nigerian consular officer has confirmed. Nigeria’s Consul-General in Johannesburg, Mr. Godwin Adama, made the confirmation in a telephone interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday. But Adama said the permit had been granted the airline and that the flight would be late in the night of Tuesday. South African Official Accuses Nigeria Of Overreacting To Xenophobic Attacks (Read Full Gist)

Clayson Monyela, spokesman of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) in South Africa, says Nigeria overreacted to the recent xenophobic attack in the country. Businesses of Nigerians based in South Africa were targetted in the attacks which made the federal government summon Bobby Moroe, South Africa’s high commissioner to Nigeria. Nigeria also pulled out of the World Economic Forum which held in South Africa while President Muhammadu Buhari sent Ahmed Abubakar, director-general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), to convey his feelings to President Cyril Ramaphosa over the incident. There were reprisal attacks across Nigeria, leading to MTN shutting down its offices nationwide. Some Shoprites stores were also looted while South African mission in Nigeria suspended operations. This Simply Implies That One Does Not Need Certificates To Be President - Yul Edochie Fires At Nigerian Judiciary and President Buhari

Yul Edochie who contested for the last elections has reacted to the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal verdict which struck out Atiku Abubakar and People’s Democractic Party’s petition of President Muhammadu Buhari not being qualified to contest in the 2019 Presidential election over his educational qualification. The tribunal yesterday in its ruling said that Mr Buhari’s certificate from the Nigerian military is higher than the Secondary School certificate which is the minimum academic requirement for the election in the constitution and he is qualified to be the president. “Mr Buhari is not only qualified but is eminently qualified” for the election, chairman of the Court of Appeal panel said. He asked the Nigerian judiciary on the verdict which meant he doesn’t need th

The Game of Thrones-inspired baby names are becoming increasingly popular. According to newly released data from the Social Security Administration, more than 4,500 children born in 2018 share the same name as characters from the hit HBO series; this figure doesn’t include more traditional names like Jon and Jaime. NBC News’ Joe Murphy points out that this data is based on the 29,000 distinct names given to U.S. newborns last year, and does not include names given to less than five babies. Among the most popular girl names were Khalessi, Yara, Lyanna, and Brienne, while boy names like Tyrion, Jorah, Ramsay made good showings. The most common GoT name of all, however, was Arya, which was identified as the 119th most popular female name of 2018 in fact—a 16-point increase from 2017. It’s also important to note that Arya is an international name that translates to “noble one” or “noble goddess,” and had appeared in the data well before HBO series’ premiere. This is also the

International Students Can Now Work In UK After Graduation’ – UK Prime Minister Says

The British Government has made it known that international students will now be able to stay and work in the UK after graduating. The new policy added that there will be no limit to the number of students who can apply as those who have the student visa can switch to a skilled worker visa if they find a job which meets the relevant criteria. The Guardian UK also reported that as from next year, all international graduates could qualify for a two-year period to work in the UK so as to increase their chances of finding long-term employment after studying. “The measure goes further than the Home Office’s latest immigration white paper, which proposed extending the four-month limit to six months and the limit for those with doctorates to a year,” Guardian stated. “It is a return to the policy that was scrapped by the coalition government in 2012 when Theresa May, as then home secretary, said the two-year post-study work visa was “too generous.” The Prime Minister

General Overseer Of the Redeemed Christian Church Of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye Warns FG Over Plans To Evacuate Nigerians

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has urged Nigerians at home not to avenge the  attacks on their compatriots in South Africa. Nigeria and South Africa locked in bitter  diplomatic row over the xenophobic  violence in the former apartheid country, leading to the looting of property belonging to  Nigerians. And the Federal Government is making arrangements to evacuate Nigerians willing to leave South Africa for home. How Robert Mugabe Killed The Freedoms He Had Worked So Hard For - Fadzayi Mahere

By Fadzayi Mahere (Zimbabwean lawyer and politician) “Wafa wanaka” – it is said that it is unAfrican to speak ill of the dead. But what choice does one have when the death of a once towering figure raises complex emotions, and not in a good way? On 18 April 1980, Zimbabwe was born. In a colourful celebration that started the previous night at Rufaro stadium in Harare (then known as Salisbury), the independence flame was lit. Bob Marley sang Zimbabwe, a song he’d written at the invitation of the government. Hope filled the air as Robert Gabriel Mugabe, the nation’s first prime minister, took his oath of office and swore allegiance to the new nation. Julius Nyerere, the leader of Tanzania, prophetically cautioned Mugabe, saying: “You have inherited a jewel in Africa. Don’t tarnish it.” Mugabe represented the birth and hope of a new era. Eloquent, ideologically clear and popular, he represented what many a Zimbabwean and parent at the time wished for the next generation. The opti

Xenophobia Update: President Muhammadu Buhari En route South Africa Over Xenophobic Attacks

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to pay a state visit to South Africa in October, the South African presidency said Saturday, after a spate of xenophobic violence in Johannesburg caused tensions between the countries. South Africa’s financial capital and surrounding areas were rocked by a surge of deadly attacks against foreigners this week, many directed against Nigerian-owned businesses and properties. The violence prompted reprisal attacks against South African firms in Nigeria and the temporary closing of South Africa’s diplomatic mission ins Lagos and Abuja. At least 10 people were killed in the violence and hundreds of shops destroyed. Buhari’s visit is meant to “reinforce the strong bonds between the two countries and jointly develop responses to challenges affecting people and businesses in South Africa and Nigeria”, said South Africa’s presidency in a statement. Foreign workers are often victims of anti-immigrant sentiment in South Africa the
