AFCON 2019: Algeria Coach Reveals What He Told His Players To Do To Chukwueze

Amidst the fatal defeat of the Super Eagles by the Algerian side, the Algerian coach, Djamel Belmadi, has revealed that he instructed his players to starve Samuel Chukwueze of space, during their 2-1 win over Nigeria on Sunday. Belmadi’s men will play Senegal in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, after beating the Super Eagles in their semi-final fixture. He has now admitted that part of their tactical plan, was to mark Chukwueze out of the game. The Villarreal winger has grown in stature throughout the tournament and netted his first international goal in the previous round against South Africa. “It was a tough game against tough opponents. AFCON 2019: All Quarter-final Fixtures Have Confirmed (See Standing List)

All the four quarter-final fixtures at the Africa Cup of Nations have been confirmed, following the completion of the Round of 16 matches. In the first game, Senegal will take on Benin, who shocked Morocco in the previous round. Nigeria clash with familiar foes South Africa later on Wednesday in Cairo. On Thursday, Ivory Coast play Algeria for a place in the semi-final. The last tie is between debutants Madagascar and Tunisia later in the day. AFCON Host, Egypt Start With Slim Win Over Zimbabwe

Hosts Egypt got their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign off to a winning start as Trezeguet’s excellent strike saw the Pharaohs secure a slim1-0 win over Zimbabwe. While Mohamed Salah was in sparkling form in Cairo on Friday it was another winger who broke the deadlock for Egypt shortly before half-time in the Group A opener. The first chance for Egypt came in the ninth minute with an Abdallah El-Said shot after an amazing play with Mohamed Salah and Marwan Mohsen. But the effort was denied by Zimbabwe goalkeeper, Sibanda. Then in the 37th minute Zimbabwe forward Khama Billiat found himself in a one on one situation with Mohamed El-Shenawy, after a rapidly played free-kick, but Al Ahly goalkeeper managed to save it. Just In: Ighalo Saves Super Eagles With Their First 2019 AFCON Win

Three time African champions, the Super Eagles of Nigeria started their campaign for a fourth title with a nervy 1-0 win over the Swallows of Burundi. A second half goal by substitute Odion Ighalo was all Gernot Rohr’s men needed for the first three points. Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr announced his starting XI to face the Sparrows of Burundi in Nigeria’s AFCON 2019 opener, dropping Odion Ighalo, Francis Uzoho and Jamilu Collins for Paul Onuachi, Daniel Akpeyi and Ola Aina respectively in a 4-3-3 formation. The Super Eagles opened their quest for a fourth AFCON title when they headed into the game with the debutants in the opening match of Group B, but where without Samuel Kalu for the encounter against the Swallows after the Bordeaux man collapsed in training on Friday.
