The federal government has opposed the move of telcos to increase charges on use unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) channels to access banking services. Some telecommunications network service providers had  sent notices to their subscribers  that with effect from October 21, USSD will attract extra charges. “ Please note that from Oct 21, we will charge N4 per 20 seconds for USSD access to banking services. Thank you,” read a notification MTN sent to customers on Sunday. But a few hours after this message went viral, Isa Pantami, minister of communications, directed telcos to halt the plan. “The attention of the federal ministry of communications has been drawn to the viral text message allegedly sent by the Mobile Network Operator MTN Niger ia and other Mobile Operators notifying subscribers of a four naira (N4:00) charge per 20 seconds on USSD access to banking services from the 21st of October 2019,” he said in a stat...

Customers who use unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) channels to access banking services would have to pay new charges from October 21. Some telecommunications network service providers have sent notices to their customers of the new charge. “Please note that from Oct 21, we will charge N4 per 20 seconds for USSD access to banking services. Thank you,” a notification sent by MTN to customers read. Banking services were introduced on USSD channels to ensure easier access to banking services. Before now, telcos charged customers per USSD session. This charge differed across networks with the highest being N20 per session. The Minister of Communications Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim has explained that he ordered the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC to ensure all mobile network operators block all SIM cards that do not meet proper registration standards until users comply with proper re-registration procedures because of their security risk. The directive, he said was a follow up to his earlier directives on assumption of office to all Agencies and Parastatals in the ministry, which led to the submission of NCC’s baseline short-term performance targets report to the minister. Isa Patanmi, the minister of communications technology, recently directed the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) to block 9.2 million telephone lines. In a statement released by the ministry, Pantami had said the lines did not meet the proper registration standards. “The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has submitted its baseline short-term performance targets report. Samsung is being sued by Australia’s consumer watchdog for allegedly making misleading claims about the water-resistant properties of its phones. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) alleges Samsung’s adverts made “false” claims about using its phones while swimming and surfing. The ACCC said it had reviewed more than 300 Samsung adverts before launching its legal action. Samsung told Reuters it would defend the case and stood by its adverts. In its statement, the ACCC said Samsung adverts depicted phones being exposed to seawater and swimming pools and claimed that this would not affect the device during its working life. Although Samsung adverts say its phones have an IP68 water resistance, said the ACCC, this rating does not cover salt water or that found in swimming pools.
