Gabriel Jesus scored the winning penalty to save Raheem Sterling’s blushes while Claudio Bravo saved a penalty as Manchester City edged Liverpool 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the 2019 Community Shield at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday.
Manchester City had taken the lead after 11 minutes through England forward Raheem Sterling after he was found in the Liverpool six-yard area by a clever David Silva flick to tap in after 11 minutes despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Alisson to keep the ball out.
The England forward should have doubled Man. City’s advantage early in the second half but saw his effort strike the post while also being flagged offside.
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk then saw a first-time effort crash off the underside of Man. City’s crossbar, with goal-line technology ruling the ball did not cross the line.
Sterling then wasted the best chance of the second half after being one-on-one with Alisson only to miss his chance and see the Liverpool keeper smother the loose ball.
