But when Margaret and Ferris Romaire got married on Nov. 24, 1946, taking a photograph was the furthest thought from the minds of everyone at the ceremony.
"It was right after the war. I'm sure someone had a camera, but nobody thought to bring one," Margaret told TODAY. "It wasn't a big thing for us." No pictures marked the day until 70 years later, when a photo shoot organized by one of their grandchildren helped recreate the special moments they failed to capture the first time around.
As jaded as modern dating has made many of us, there are still some love stories out there that give us a glimmer of hope. Let this one precious couple who's celebrating their 70th anniversary restore your faith in love. Madge and Don's granddaughter Lucy told us that they're still smitten with each other after all these years.
One Fall at a friend's party, Don came early and saw a tiny girl carving a giant pumpkin and just knew she was the one. They wrote each other every day while he was in the navy, and he wanted to propose to her before shipping out. Getting the ring would prove a little tricky, however. He had to time the guards on duty perfectly in order to run and jump the fence to town. "That's right, he went AWOL to get this ring!"
Lucy said; his pants even ripped all the way down on one side from coming down on barbwire. He found the jewelry store and told them that he needed an engagement ring and had $200. The salesman conveniently had "just the ring and it was $200" - Don still laughs about this part of the story. He made it back to base without getting caught and mailed the ring to Madge, who was too nervous to open it when it got to her. "She of course said 'yes' and here we are 70 years, four children, 10 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren later with happy hearts celebrating these two incredible people!" Lucy said.
The bracelet Madge is wearing in their anniversary shoot was a gift from Don on their honeymoon.
