STORIES THAT ROCKED THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY THIS PAST WEEK

There has been a lot of drama at the National Assembly in the past few weeks which in some cases has caused the integrity of the lawmakers. Here are  top 5 stories that rocked the National Assembly this past week:
1. The Sex Scandal: Three members of the House of Representatives have been accused of sexual misconduct by the United State government. This was made known after the US ambassador, Mr.
James Entwistle, sent a petition to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara. The members involved include Mohammed Gololo representing Gamawa federal constituency of Bauchi state, Samuel Ikon representing Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium federal constituency of Akwa Ibom state and Mark Gbillah representing Gwer East/Gwer West federal constituency in Benue state. Gololo was accused of soliciting for sex from a hotel attendant while Ikon and Gbillah were allegedly said to have asked a parking attendant to arrange prostitutes.
 2. The Senate Forgery: As reported, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami is set to prosecute Senate president Bukola  Saraki and his deputy Senator Ike  Ekweremadu for forging senate rules to emerge leaders of the senate However, the Senate on Tuesday, June 21 summoned Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) over a suit he filed against Bukola Saraki, the Senate president, and Ike Ekweremadu, his deputy, for alleged forgery. The Senate resolved to mandate its committee on judiciary  to summon the AGF “to explain and to justify with evidence the basis for his act and to explain why it does not constitute incompetence, misconduct, contempt of court and abuse of office”.
3. The Procurement Act: The Senate has been lobbying for diversification of the economy since its inauguration. The lawmakers have patronized made in Nigeria goods by acquiring some of these items and urged Nigerians to follow their examples. However, the Senate on Thursday, June 16, passed the procurement act into law to make buying Nigerian made goods compulsory. This followed the consideration of the report of the Senate committee on Public Procurement chaired by Senator Joshua Dariye representing Plateau Central senatorial district. The bill is titled: a bill for an act to amend the Public Procurement Act to provide for and adopt a local content policy and timely completion of procurement processes and other related matter.
4. Brewing rift between PDP and APC: The ‎People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senators members in the upper chamber of the National assembly were reported to have withdrawn their support for the President Muhammadu Buhari’s-led government. The lawmakers announced their decision at a press briefing at the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 22. The PDP senators listed the alleged continuous victimization of its members by anti-graft agency, proposed trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu for alleged forgery of senate standing rule as part of the reasons for their grievance against the APC-led government. However, some senators on Thursday, June 23, passed a vote of confidence on President M‎uhammadu Buhari, this senators, whom are said to comprise of mostly the All Progressives Congress (APC) were reacting to the decision of their colleagues in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to withdraw support for the president.
5. Ambassadorial Nominees: President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, June 9, released the list of ambassadorial nominees which was contained in a letter sent to Saraki. With respect to the list submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari, the Senate summoned Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, to explain the processes by which the list came about. The matter was referred to committee on foreign affairs to report in a week.

Kola Abiola, the eldest son of Late Chief MKO Abiola, has finally spoken on his alleged marriage to Aisha Babangida, the eldest daughter of Nigeria’s former Military President Gen.
