Nigerian Musician, Azeez Fashola aka Naira Marley, has been granted bail by the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos At the resumed bail application, his lead defense counsel Olalekan Ojo, SAN, urged the court to accept the bail application based on the presumption of his innocence in accordance with Section 162 (1) The defense also pleaded that a liberal approach is taken in hearing the bail application. The prosecution counsel, led by Rotimi Oyedepo, however, argued that it is not the temporary release of the singer that mattered but the final judgment. The newly inaugurated Governor of Oyo State, Mr. Seyi Makinde, has said he would scrap the N3, 000 being paid by pupils of all public primary and secondary schools in the state and also promised to donate his salary to pensioners. He admitted that the greatest challenge confronting the state was the issue of poverty and promised to tackle it with a drastic leap in agriculture, just as he pledged to look into the issue of over 400, 000 out-of school-children in the state. The National Youth Service Corps says it has decided to henceforth include the date of birth of corps members on the certificate of national service as a measure to guard against age falsification. The NYSC said its decision was informed by the West African Examination Certificate and the scheme’s Exemption Certificate which included the dates of birth of the holders. The NYSC Director-General, Brig Shuaibu Ibrahim, stated this in Abuja at the 2019 Batch B pre-mobilisation workshop, noting that the scheme observed that some tertiary institutions were guilty of presenting over-aged graduates for mobilisation. Ibrahim said on Tuesday that the rising number of corps-producing institutions and the “attendant rise in corps members’ population pose a great challenge which we must address.” The DG said, “We have observed that some institutions present over-aged graduates for mobilisation. Such graduates falsify their age in order to avoid appearing on the exemption list.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday urged that its members should not be held responsible if there is any disruption in the university system, considering how the Federal Government had not shown commitment to carrying out the 2019 Memorandum of Action. The ASUU National President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, stated this at a briefing in Abuja, to give an update on the ongoing renegotiation with the government and to clear the air over the N25billion confirmed by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to have been approved for universities. Ekene Franklin, the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) top scorer has called on the Federal Government to amend the method of teaching mathematics so as to benefit students and make them successful. Franklin said mathematics and science subjects should be taught in local languages which students could easily understand. This, he said would bring out the genius in the learners. Franklin who scored 347 marks said in an interview with Daily Trust that students should learn mathematics by memorising steps and formula. The inability to learn by heart, he said tended to develop the fear of mathematics. “Mathematics should be taught informally; we must put aside this formal method of teaching maths to make it appealing to many. In China, they learn maths using their language, and I think that has really helped them. There are a lot of geniuses, but mathematics becomes difficult to learn because of the technicality of the way it is being taught,” he said. C

Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday ordered the immediate removal of all trucks from the bridges and roads within Apapa within 2 weeks. “A Presidential directive has been issued for the immediate clearing up of the Apapa gridlock and the restoration of law and order to Apapa and its environs within 2 weeks,” the presidency tweeted. “The directive mandates the immediate removal of all trucks from the bridges and roads within Apapa and all adjoining streets leading into the Apapa axis,” it added. The Federal Government is coming up with a policy that will remove the ownership of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) cylinders from consumers. FG stated that the move would help deepen the use of LPG, popularly known as cooking gas, adding that the government had reached an agreement with two original cylinder manufacturers to deliver 600,000 cylinders to LPG distributors on credit, with a pre-payment period of 18 months. Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on LPG penetration in Abuja on Tuesday, the Senior Technical Assistant to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources on Downstream and Infrastructure, Brenda Ataga , noted that the planned policy on gas cylinders would require that the ownership of the facility “rests strictly on the dealers and distributors.” She noted that aside from deepening the penetration and usage of LPG across the country, the policy would also address issues of safety. The Justice Nicholas Oweibo-led Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, on Monday, ordered that hip-hop musician, Azeez Fashola, a.k.a Naira Marley,be remanded in prison custody following alleged credit card fraud. Naira Marley was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on an 11 count charge bordering on alleged credit card fraud. Justice Nicholas Oweibo on Monday ordered his remand after his arraignment before the court on an 11 count charge of alleged credit fraud. The EFCC had filed the charge on Tuesday, May 14. However, when the counts were read to him, Naira Marley pleaded not guilty. Justice Nicholas Oweibo adjourned the case till May 30 to hear arguments on Naira Marley’s application for bail. He therefore, ordered that the musician be remanded in prison until the adjourned date.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has in a riposte pontificated that the commission has the constitutional right to investigate whomever it wants, noting that the President of the eight senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, should calm down if he has nothing to hide. Disclosing this in a statement obtained by Vanguard, EFCC dismissed the notion that the commission wants to witch-hunt Saraki intentionally. Recall that Saraki had in a statement signed by his special adviser on media and publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said that  EFCC’s fight against him is a mere witch-hunt exercise, aimed at settling scores, laced with malicious and partisan motives.  He advised the commission to desist from further ‘label to damage’ plots against him. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has preferred 11 charges bordering on fraud against upcoming musician, Azeez Fashola, commonly  known as Naira Marley, for alleged credit card fraud. The musician effectively risks seven years in jail if found guilty, as Section 33 (2) which he was accused of breaching, reads: “Any person who uses: a counterfeit access device; an unauthorised access device; an access device issued to another person; resulting in a loss or gain commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of not more than seven years or a fine of not more than N5,000,000.00 and forfeiture of the advantage or value derived from his act. The federal government has cautioned Nigerians over the unhealthy status of imported rice smuggled into the country. At a media briefing in Lagos on Monday, Lai Mohammed, minister of information, said the government could not guarantee the healthy status of the rice having spent months on the high seas and warehouses. He appealed to Nigerians to complement the efforts of the government by consuming only locally-grown and processed rice which he said “is fresher, tastier and healthier’’. “We don’t know where or how imported rice is made or how old it is. It is reported that most of the rice dumped on us are old and probably rejected. The citizens of those countries do not eat this rice. The citizens of Benin Republic also do not eat it. But they send it to us,” he said. “Unhealthy foods are dangerous to our health. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, says defaulting motorists run the risk of being fined N10, 000 as it begins a special patrol code-named “Operation Show Your Driver’s Licence” on Monday, PM News reports. The State Sector Commander, Mr Hyginus Omeje, made this known in a statement on Wednesday, signed by the Sector’s Head of Public Education, Superintendent Route Commander (SRC) Florence Edor. Omeje said that the two-week special patrol was aimed at reducing the high incidents of motorists driving without valid driver’s licence in the state, as most motorists who apply for licence never care to go back to the licensing offices to collect their permanent licence. “We are starting our patrol operation by May 20, as we have 64,468 uncollected permanent driver’s licence across the state,” he said.
