Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved the appointment of Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed as substantive Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, a government’s statement said on Friday. The statement was signed by the Secretary to the State Government Prof Mamman Saba Jibril. Mohammed was until his appointment the Deputy Rector (Academics) at the Federal Polytechnic Offa (FPO), Kwara State. He holds two doctorate degrees, including one in Metallurgical and Material Science at the Witwatersrand University South Africa in 2016. He had bagged his Masters of Engineering (Mechanical) in 1998 from the Obafemi Awolowo University, eight years after he finished his first degree in a Mechanical Engineering (1990) at the University of Ilorin. The Lagos State Police has arrested a 25-year-old thief who abandoned his mission to watch a couple having sex in their apartment at Innocent Amadi Street (Mercy Estate) Baruwa area of Ipaja, Lagos State. The thief identified as Uchenna Ebube slept off in the process and was nabbed after Mr. Idris Olumo and his wife finished up and met him in their living room by 4 a.m. Upon being interrogated, Uchenna said he was at the couple's apartment to steal valuables after gaining entrance through the window. He was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, after being arraigned before an Ejigbo Magistrate Court following his arrest by the Police at Ipaja Division. Mr. T.O Shomade, the Presiding Magistrate adjourned the case till Novermber 13 while also ordering that the suspect be remanded in prison custody pending when he perfects his bail conditions. Another house of horror was, Thursday, discovered by the Kwara State police command in Ilorin, the state capital. The alleged illegal rehabilitation centre is located at Has Idiroko, Odota, along the Ilorin International Airport. A total of 108 victims were rescued by the police from the detention centre comprising 103 males, five females and scores of children. Some of the victims, who spoke to newsmen, said they were brought to the centre from different places by their parents and relatives. A victim identified as Collins Temitope, said he was brought to the centre in Ilorin from Lagos, saying “a sum of N150,000 was paid to the man in charge of the centre.” Collins, who claimed to be a graduate, described the place where he spent four days as hell, saying they were sleeping with destitute and ate once in a day. The management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has warned its customers against making cash payments during the ongoing Metre Asset Provider (MAP) scheme. The Executive Director, Commercial, Mr. Abu Ejoor, speaking at the launch of the Ondo State MAP scheme in Akure, said none of the customers across the four states of coverage of the electricity company should pay cash to anybody. "Once a customer’s premises is cleared, such customer would be advised on how to pay for the meter, whether single-phase or three-phase, the price of which is N38, 350 and N70, 350 respectively,” he said. He listed requirements for the installation to include passport photograph, a utility bill for postpaid customers and vending slip for prepaid customers, telephone numbers and email addresses. The federal government has opposed the move of telcos to increase charges on use unstructured supplementary service data (USSD) channels to access banking services. Some telecommunications network service providers had  sent notices to their subscribers  that with effect from October 21, USSD will attract extra charges. “ Please note that from Oct 21, we will charge N4 per 20 seconds for USSD access to banking services. Thank you,” read a notification MTN sent to customers on Sunday. But a few hours after this message went viral, Isa Pantami, minister of communications, directed telcos to halt the plan. “The attention of the federal ministry of communications has been drawn to the viral text message allegedly sent by the Mobile Network Operator MTN Niger ia and other Mobile Operators notifying subscribers of a four naira (N4:00) charge per 20 seconds on USSD access to banking services from the 21st of October 2019,” he said in a statement, Uwa Sul

Some telecommunications network service providers have sent notices to their customers of the new charge. “Please note that from Oct 21, we will charge N4 per 20 seconds for USSD access to banking services. Thank you,” a notification sent by MTN to customers read. Banking services were introduced on USSD channels to ensure easier access to banking services. Before now, telcos charged customers per USSD session. This charge differed across networks with the highest being N20 per session. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has said that terrorism and terrorist groups could not be eliminated alone by the military unless religious bodies and organisations in the country come to the “forefront of this spiritual battle.” The Army chief noted that the focus must be religious groups interfacing on addressing the ideologies which fuelled the Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists.
